The project nearly broke me, but with your support and a bit of Irish grit, I crossed the finish line.
Welcome to GAME DAY!
• PROJECT STATS •
THE HOST
Linda of Calling It Home
THE GOAL
Transform a room in six weeks
THE SPACE
My 17-year-old son’s chaotic room
THE PARTICIPANT
My firstborn, the one who made me a parent
THE PLAN
Boost functionality and increase the cool factor
Here’s a throwback to the BEFORE state, taken a couple of years ago. While my son has gotten better at keeping things neat, the furniture and decor hadn’t changed much.
NOW, THE FINAL REVEAL:
The Moody, Masculine Tee Room
I’M RELIEVED THIS PROJECT IS DONE!
POST-GAME ANALYSIS
Here’s the breakdown of the One Room Challenge journey:
- Discovered $100 in cash and $40 in gift cards during the clean-up.
- Cleared out five years’ worth of old schoolwork and clothes.
- Sold his old bookcase and dresser, which were the wrong scale for the room.
Then the transformation began:
- Painted three walls black, leaving the chalkboard wall intact.
- Repainted a dresser using a Homeright sprayer.
- Built, stained, and installed a metal and wood bookshelf (Ikea hack), desk, and three-wall picture ledge.
- Added storage with a metal trunk, a new bookcase, and improved closet organization.
- Rebuilt and upholstered the headboard.
- Bought new bedding (still waiting for the ticking stripe duvet).
- Brought in additional lighting – two sconces above the bed, a desk lamp, and two lamps for the dresser.
- Installed hooks for towels and hats.
- Mounted a snowboard and baseball bats on the wall.
- Fitted bamboo roman shades.
- Created a chalkboard art piece inspired by “Friday Night Lights.”
- The best part for my son? Enlarging a photo of him and his football co-captains and turning it into block art.
A huge thank you to Linda at Calling It Home for organizing the One Room Challenge. It’s the best push to complete a room from start to finish.
Stay tuned for more details on each project. For now, enjoy browsing the incredible spaces completed over these intense six weeks. GO TEAM!
