Happy Independence Day!
The 4th of July is here, and it’s time to celebrate our nation’s birthday with family, friends, fun, and of course delicious food! Whether you’re hosting a big backyard barbecue, heading to a lakeside retreat, or simply enjoying a relaxing day at home, no Independence Day celebration is complete without a festive dessert.
This year, why not whip up a batch of red, white, and blue 4th of July cupcakes that are as patriotic as they are delicious? These tie-dye cupcakes, inspired by the ever-talented Kristin of Delightfully Dowling, are a fun and easy way to show off your American spirit. Best of all, they’re simple enough for anyone to make—even if you’re short on time! If you’ve been following our Mangia Mondays series, you know we love sharing festive and tasty recipes, and these cupcakes are no exception.
A Star-Spangled Baking Adventure
For our mangia-mondays-4th-of-july-cupcakes, my daughter Hannah and I took inspiration the tie-dye cupcakes the ever-talented Kristin of Delightfully Dowling featured. Here’s how we did it:
Ingredients:
- 1 box of white cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the package: eggs, oil, and water)
- Red and blue food coloring (gel food coloring works best for vibrant hues)
- 1 tub of store-bought white frosting (or homemade buttercream if you prefer)
- Red, white, and blue sprinkles for decoration
Instructions:
- Prepare the Batter – Mix the white cake batter according to the directions on the box. Once combined, divide the batter evenly into three separate bowls.
- Add the Colors – Using food coloring, tint one bowl of batter red and another blue, leaving the third bowl white. Stir well to achieve a vibrant color. If using liquid food coloring, you may need to add a good amount to achieve a deep hue, whereas gel food coloring requires less.
- Layer the Colors – Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners and spoon about a tablespoon of blue batter into each liner. Next, add a tablespoon of white batter, followed by a tablespoon of red batter. The liners should be about 2/3 full.
- Bake and Cool – Bake the cupcakes according to the directions on the cake mix box. Once done, let them cool completely before frosting.
Patriotic Frosting Fun!
Now for the best part decorating! We decided to continue the tie-dye theme with our frosting, though we found it a bit tricky at first. Here’s what worked best for us:
Tie-Dye Frosting Tips:
- Divide the white frosting into three bowls and tint one red and another blue, leaving the third white.
- To achieve the swirled effect, fold the edges of a piping bag down halfway.
- Smear red frosting along one side of the bag and blue along the other, then fill the center with white frosting.
- Carefully pipe the frosting onto each cupcake in a circular motion, creating a patriotic swirl.
While our first few attempts weren’t perfect, we had fun experimenting and loved how vibrant the final cupcakes looked! If tie-dye frosting feels too ambitious, simple white frosting with festive sprinkles is always a great option.
Remember: Sprinkles make everything better!

The Spirit of Independence Day
As we gather with loved ones to celebrate the 4th of July, it’s important to remember the meaning behind this special day. It’s a time to reflect on our country’s history, honor the sacrifices of those who came before us, and cherish the freedoms we hold dear.
America the Beautiful
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for pilgrim feet,
Whose stern impassion’d stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thine ev’ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!
O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness,
And ev’ry gain divine!
O Beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam,
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
