You may have come across some of Amber’s stunning designs making waves across the internet—her ability to create spaces that are both stylish and livable has earned her a well-deserved following. Every project she works on is infused with personality, and today, she’s sharing one of her favorite corners of her own home with us.
A Special Place in the Home
One of the best things about this series is how it encourages us to pause and appreciate what we love most about our homes. It’s so easy to get caught up in thinking about the things we want to change, the never-ending to-do lists, or the dream renovations that we’d love to tackle someday. But sometimes, all it takes is a fresh perspective to realize just how much we already cherish about the spaces we live in.
For Amber, that special place is her family room—the true heart of her home.
A Room That Reflects Family Life
Hi Shine Your Light readers! I’m Amber from Simple Dwellings, and I am so excited to be here today sharing a favorite part of my home. What I love about this series is that it allows us to focus on the things that truly make our houses feel like home. While I could easily list off the projects I still want to tackle, I love the reminder to pause and appreciate the spaces that bring us joy.
For me, that space is our family room. With two young kids, life in our home is always busy, and this is where we gather, relax, and spend quality time together. It’s the one place where everyone naturally gravitates, whether we’re watching a movie, playing a board game, or just unwinding at the end of the day. It’s filled with laughter, love, and the simple moments that make life special.
Creating a Space That Feels Like Home
After experimenting with different layouts and furniture pieces, I feel like this space now represents our style and the casual way we live. I wanted it to be beautiful, but also functional and livable—somewhere we can kick back and be ourselves. More than anything, I love that this room is filled with meaningful pieces. Some are family heirlooms, some have been with us for years, and others have sentimental value that I hope my kids will come to appreciate as they grow older.
It’s not about perfection—it’s about creating a space that tells a story.
A Wall of Encouragement
I decided to take an empty wall in the room and turn it into a reminder of something important. I found a quote on Pinterest that resonated with me, so I used a paint pen to write it directly on the wall. The message is simple but powerful: work hard, do your best, and never give up. I want my kids to grow up always believing in themselves and knowing that effort and perseverance matter.
This small detail adds so much warmth and character to the space, and it serves as a daily reminder of the values she hopes to instill in her children.
The Chair with a Story
Another beloved piece in Amber’s family room is her slipcovered chair—which, believe it or not, is actually hiding a green recliner from her husband’s college days!
I won’t lie—this chair has seen better days. But it has also been with us through so many moves and seasons of life. One day, I envision replacing it with a more tailored chair in a neutral fabric, maybe with some beautiful patterned pillows. But for now, I love it for what it represents. Every time I walk into the room, I smile because it’s a reminder of our journey as a family.
It’s these little details—the ones that hold memories—that make a home feel truly lived in and loved.
A Place for Connection
This family room isn’t just a space—it’s a feeling. It’s where life happens, where conversations flow freely, and where the most ordinary moments turn into cherished memories.
At the end of the day, this room is our little corner of the world. It’s where we gather, reconnect, and simply enjoy being together. Whether we’re curled up on the couch watching a movie or just chatting about our day, it’s these moments that mean the most. And that’s what home is all about.
Thank You, Amber!
Amber, thank you so much for sharing your home and heart with us! I love how much natural light, warmth, and personality fill this space. From the gourd lamps to the Greek key throw, the X-bench repurposed as a side table, and, of course, that beautiful handwritten quote—there are so many inspiring details here!
This family room is a perfect reminder that home isn’t about having everything just right—it’s about creating a space where love, laughter, and life unfold naturally.
