Good morning, friends!
Can you believe we are already at the end of November? It feels like the month just flew by, and now the holiday season is truly upon us. While many people jump straight into Christmas decorating right after Thanksgiving, I tend to ease into the festive spirit. There’s something about waiting until December that makes it feel more magical, as if the transition from autumn to winter happens naturally.

However, living in New England means winter weather can arrive at any moment. Snowstorms don’t wait for holiday schedules, and once the temperatures drop, there’s no turning back! So, I’m feeling the urge to get ahead of the freezing cold and decorate the exterior of our home before I find myself attempting to arrange greenery with frostbitten fingers.

One of the things I’m most excited about this year is decorating Christmas window boxes! Our new house has these charming window boxes, and while I’m still a bit intimidated at the thought of maintaining plants in them during the warmer months, I think I can confidently pull off a beautiful, festive look for the holiday season. A well-decorated window box adds such a warm and inviting touch to a home’s exterior, instantly making the house feel cozy and full of Christmas spirit. Just look at these stunning inspirations:

Christmas Window Box Decorating Ideas

If you’re looking to dress up your own window boxes this Christmas, here are a few ideas to get you started:

- Evergreen Arrangements: Start with a base of fresh evergreen branches like pine, cedar, or fir. These provide a lush, wintery foundation and hold up beautifully even in cold temperatures.
- Pops of Red: Add some vibrant holiday color with classic red accents like holly berries, winterberries, or faux red ornaments. They contrast beautifully against the greenery and bring that quintessential Christmas charm.
- Pinecones & Natural Elements: Pinecones add wonderful texture and a rustic touch to your arrangement. You can even lightly dust them with white paint or artificial snow for a frosted look.
- Twinkling Lights: Battery-operated fairy lights woven throughout the greenery can make window boxes look even more magical at night. Warm white lights create a cozy glow, while multicolored lights bring a playful, nostalgic feel.
- Ribbons & Bows: A beautiful plaid or velvet ribbon tied into a large bow can elevate the entire look, adding a polished and elegant finish.
- Mini Ornaments & Holiday Picks: Incorporate small shatterproof ornaments, snowflakes, or decorative holiday picks to add extra detail and sparkle.
- Artificial Snow or Flocking: Lightly flocked greenery gives a snowy, frosted effect without relying on Mother Nature’s timing.
- Seasonal Twigs & Birch Branches: Adding taller elements like red dogwood branches, birch logs, or willow twigs can create height and drama, making your arrangement more dynamic.

Large Urns for a Grand Entrance

In addition to window boxes, I also love decorating the large urns by our front steps. These oversized planters provide the perfect opportunity to create a grand, welcoming holiday display. Urns can be styled similarly to window boxes but offer even more room for creativity and layering.

Here are some stunning urn ideas to inspire your entryway decor:

How to Style Christmas Urns
- Start with a Sturdy Base: Use floral foam or soil as a foundation to secure branches and decorations in place.
- Lush Greenery: Just like window boxes, evergreen branches serve as the core of any beautiful Christmas urn display. Layer different types for texture and depth.
- Birch Logs & Tall Twigs: Arrange tall birch logs or decorative twigs in the center for structure and elegance.
- Festive Pops of Color: Incorporate red berries, dried hydrangeas, or even faux poinsettias to brighten up the arrangement.
- Shiny & Sparkling Accents: Large ornaments, gold or silver branches, and glittered picks add a touch of holiday glamour.
- Seasonal Bows & Ribbons: A luxurious ribbon cascading down the side of the urn adds movement and charm.
- Lighting for Evening Magic: A few strands of mini LED lights wrapped around the arrangement create a magical nighttime glow.
Why Window Boxes & Urns Make a Difference
One of the best things about decorating window boxes and urns for Christmas is how they instantly elevate your home’s curb appeal. Whether you have a classic colonial, a cozy cottage, or a modern home, festive outdoor arrangements add warmth and charm that make your house stand out.
Even if you don’t have window boxes or large urns, you can still apply these ideas to smaller planters, hanging baskets, or even decorative containers placed near your porch or entryway. The key is to use natural and festive elements to bring the holiday season to life.
Quick Tips for Maintaining Outdoor Holiday Arrangements

- Choose Hardy Greenery: Some evergreens, like cedar and pine, hold up better in cold temperatures than others. Avoid anything that will dry out too quickly.
- Mist with Water: If you’re experiencing dry winter air, lightly mist your greenery with water every few days to keep it fresh longer.
- Secure Decorations: Use floral wire or hot glue to attach ornaments and accents securely, so they don’t blow away in winter winds.
- Use Weather-Resistant Materials: If you’re adding bows, picks, or ornaments, ensure they are designed for outdoor use to withstand the elements.
Ringing in the Christmas Season
As the sun shines today, I’m off to bring some holiday cheer to the outside of our home! There’s something so joyful about decorating for Christmas—every little touch adds warmth and festivity to the season. Whether you’re filling window boxes with fresh greenery, arranging grand urns by the front door, or simply hanging a welcoming wreath, these small efforts make the season feel even more special.

I hope this inspires you to add some festive flair to your own home! What are your favorite ways to decorate your outdoor space for Christmas? Let me know in the comments! Wishing you all a wonderful, cozy day filled with holiday spirit.
