Cane Styles: Oh The Possibilities!

Yesterday, I shared my imperfectly recaned chair, and while hunting for caning supplies, I learned so much about the different types of caning styles. Since I’m sure my Little Engine That Could pep talk has inspired you to dive into your own furniture makeover, I thought I’d share my findings with you!

After exploring the variety of cane webbing options, I was tempted to recane all my chairs with unique styles beyond the traditional weaves they originally came with. Common sense prevailed…for now. But if another caning project comes my way, I’m definitely experimenting with a different pattern.

The cane webbing options below are machine-woven and can be purchased by the foot from online suppliers. They’re often available in bleached or unbleached finishes.

Traditional Cane Webbing

This is the classic caning style most commonly seen on furniture. It comes in various open weave sizes: 3/8”, 1/2”, 3/4”, 1”. This traditional style is also known as open mesh.

Caned Furniture Resurgence

Caned furniture has been around for centuries, but it’s experiencing a modern revival, thanks to retailers like Restoration Hardware. Here are a couple of examples:

Refreshing Caned Furniture

If you have a tired or damaged piece of caned furniture, why not refresh it with a new weave or a bold paint job?

Feeling inspired yet? Are you now thinking about that old furniture piece tucked away in your mom’s house? I know I am!

If you’re ready for a spring DIY project, check out Craigslist for cane furniture opportunities. For instance, these solid wood folding chairs in Tolland, CT, are a steal! There are  5 cane back chairs, two needing recaning, priced at $15 each or $100 for the set. Imagine how stunning these would look during the holidays!

If they were just a little closer, I’d grab them myself.
