The Bamboo Chair Makeover

Almost a year ago my wonderful parents-in-law donated this chair and ottoman to their (crazy) acquired daughter.

I can’t recall Mark’s exact words when he came home from work to find these pieces from his childhood home in our garage, but it was something along the lines of “Oh no Donna, no. No No No No No.” I knew all he could see was the faded fabric, but these pieces are so well made, and I love the details.

For the time being I decided on making over just the chair, but down the road I might do the ottoman as well.

I thought about keeping the bamboo natural in color and doing a bold geometric fabric:

….but considering how much BROWN we are working with in this house already, along with my long-term goal for my living room to have built-in bookcases, I was completely swayed by this inspiration photo….

So….
surprise surprise, she’s black and white!

The cushions were revived by a local reupholsterer and she did a fantastic job with them. I took Mary Ann’s advice and went with a heavy cotton twill fabric, that I pre-washed, for the slipcovers.

They will be bleached many times over the course of their life, I’m sure!

I also finally splurged on a colorful little something something that will be coming to live in this land of misfit toys.

It’s taking me a while to get there, but slowly and surely our living room is becoming my vision of a neutral palette with lots of natural elements, a bit of black and punches of color.
