Essential Tools for Every DIYer
Crown Moulding Tool
If your favorite DIYer has crown moulding projects on their to-do list, the Kreg Crown Pro is a game-changer. Crown moulding can be tricky, especially in older homes where walls and angles are not always even. This tool simplifies the process and ensures precise cuts, making the installation much easier and stress-free.
A few years ago, when I struggled with perfecting my crown moulding corners, I discovered this tool online. Watching a quick tutorial on YouTube helped me grasp the concept, and after that, it was smooth sailing! For the price, this is one of my favorite sanity-saving tools.
Additionally, learning how to cope crown moulding has significantly improved my technique, and I highly recommend investing in a sturdy coping saw with a comfortable handle.
Pocket Hole Jig
After borrowing a friend’s Kreg pocket hole jig, I knew I had to get one for myself! It’s incredibly useful for assembling furniture, securing bookcases, and even creating custom mudroom lockers. This tool allows for precise and strong joinery, making DIY furniture projects more professional and durable. Cordless Drill/Driver
A high-quality cordless drill/driver is an absolute must for any DIYer. The model I use comes with a long-lasting battery and charger, making it both powerful and reliable. Pairing it with an accessory kit filled with various drill bits and screwdriver heads makes for a fantastic gift bundle.
Multi-Tools: The Ultimate Time Savers
Oscillating Multi-Tool
One of the most versatile tools I own is my oscillating multi-tool, and honestly, I don’t know how I lived without it! I use it for everything—from cutting drywall and trimming door casings to removing tiles and sanding hard-to-reach spots. It truly is a DIYer’s best friend.
When I removed our foyer tiles, this tool saved me hours of labor compared to using a crowbar and hammer. I also highly recommend grabbing this accessory set, which is a much better deal than buying blades and sanding pads separately.
Rotary Tool
A Dremel 7700 Rotary Tool is another must-have for precision work. It’s great for detailed sanding, carving, and even cutting through drywall and wood. When I refinished my dining table, I used it to get into all the nooks and crannies, making the job much easier. Laser Tools for Precision Work
Laser Measuring Tape
If you want to take measurements with ease, a laser measuring tape is a fantastic tool. This one has a digital display, but also includes a classic measuring tape for double-checking measurements (a must for anyone with aging eyes like mine!).
Laser Level
This is the only tool on this list that I don’t own yet, but it’s at the top of my Christmas wish list! Installing wall moulding, wainscoting, and gallery walls would be so much easier with this horizontal and vertical cross-line laser level. It even attaches to a tripod for hands-free convenience. Mark laughs at me when I tell him this is what I want for Christmas—but hey, some women love shoes, some love handbags, and I love tools!
Paint Sprayer: A Game-Changer
A paint sprayer is one of those tools that makes painting so much faster and smoother. When I first got mine, I was so excited that I painted a piece of furniture, our garage doors, and front door all in the same day!
Paint sprayers are ideal for cabinets, trim, stair spindles, furniture, and even built-ins. While they do require a bit of prep work to prevent overspray, and about 10 minutes of cleaning afterward, they are worth every penny. I’ve used mine to update our fireplace surround and family room built-ins, and the results were fantastic.
Compound Miter Saw: A Woodworker’s Best Friend
If you or your favorite DIYer enjoys woodworking, a compound miter saw is an essential investment. It allows for precise cuts, making it ideal for installing baseboards, crown moulding, and custom furniture.
While my miter saw is quite heavy and on the pricier side, beginners can opt for a smaller, more affordable model that still gets the job done. This tool has been instrumental in my DIY journey, and I highly recommend it for anyone looking to expand their skills.
