How to Make a No-Sew Upholstered Bench – Step-by-Step
Step 1: Prep Your Bench
Start with a clean, dry Nelson Slat Wooden Bench. Wipe off any dust or debris. You can also sand it down lightly for better fabric adhesion if desired.
Step 2: Measure & Cut the Foam
Place your GoTo Foam cushion on top of the bench and trim to fit if necessary. Most benches will match this 18″x36″ size, but minor adjustments are easy with a utility knife.
Step 3: Cut Your Fabric
Use the rotary cutter to cut your gold velvet fabric, leaving at least 4–5 inches of overhang on all sides of the foam and bench. This extra margin ensures you can wrap and staple without pulling too tightly.
Step 4: Wrap & Staple
Layer the fabric (pattern side down), then the foam, and place the bench top-down on top. Pull the fabric up over one side and staple in the center with your Arrow T50 Staple Gun. Repeat on the opposite side, pulling tight. Continue stapling toward the corners, alternating sides to keep tension even.
Tip: Fold corners like you would wrap a gift for a clean, smooth finish.
Step 5: Add Decorative Tacks
Flip the bench over and line the edges with upholstery tacks for added style. Not only do they secure the fabric, but they also give your bench that designer touch.
Design Ideas & Variations
- Try different fabrics: Faux leather, canvas, or linen offer unique looks.
- Paint the bench legs: Complement or contrast your fabric for a custom palette.
- Use patterned foam padding: For a touch of hidden personality underneath!
Where to Use Your DIY Upholstered Bench
- Entryway: A stylish spot to sit while putting on shoes.
- Bedroom: Place it at the foot of your bed for added elegance and storage.
- Dining area: Use as seating on one side of the table.
- Living room: Tuck it under a window or use as a coffee table alternative.
