Step-by-Step: DIY Fabric Baskets (No-Sew or Sew Options!)
Step 1: Measure and Cut Your Fabric
Use the soft tape measure to measure two fabric rectangles: one for the outer shell and one for the lining. A good starter size is 12” x 18”. Cut your pieces with the rotary cutter and mat for clean, straight edges.
Step 2: Add Fusible Interfacing
Cut your Pellon interfacing to match the fabric pieces. Follow the directions to fuse it onto the wrong side of the fabric using an iron—this gives your basket its shape and strength.
Step 3: Fold and Glue (No-Sew Version)
If you’re skipping the sewing, fold the fabric in half (right sides together), glue the side seams with Aleene’s Fabric Fusion, and press firmly. Let it dry thoroughly. Then, box the corners by folding the side seams flat and gluing across to create a base.
Step 4: Stitch It Up (Optional Sewing)
If sewing, use the Gutermann thread and your preferred stitching method to sew the sides and box the corners. This option adds durability and is great if you’re comfortable with basic sewing.
Step 5: Turn and Tuck
Turn your basket right side out and fold the top edge inward for a clean finish. You can glue this folded edge or top-stitch it if you’re sewing.
Step 6: Add Your Personal Touch
Add labels, handles, or inner pockets if desired. You can even decorate the outside with embroidery or paint for custom flair.
Pro Tips for Better Baskets
- Use heavier canvas or duck cloth for a more structured basket.
- Mix and match patterns for the inner lining and outer shell to add contrast.
- Make multiple sizes for different uses—small ones for keys and cords, larger ones for towels or toys.
- Use leftover fabric scraps to make matching pouches or mini baskets.
